"B/L vs Sea Waybill"

The ocean shipping document can take the form of a Bill of Lading (as title document) or a Sea Waybill (non negotiable), which for is used depend on the destination.

Bill of Lading (B/L) represent the title to the goods. no matter whether made out to order (negotiable) or to a named consignee (non negotiable).

Sea Waybill is a simple contract of carriage and doesn't represent as title to the goods, it is also known as "data freight receipt", "express bill of lading" or "ocean waybill".

note :
sea waybill format are same as Bill of Lading,  the difference of B/L and Waybill is statement on the form indicating that it is non negotiable document and there are no original.

Bill of Lading or Sea Waybill can be issued by

  1. by a carrier or it's agent  : parties which operate vessel who dedicated to transport the goods for the account of shipper or contractual carrier.
  2. by a contractual carrier/NVOCC or it's agent : Parties which contract the carriage of goods for the account of the shipper (using the service of an actual carrier)
